Smoking Cessation

Cigarette smoking is considered a designer addiction, because the cause of the addiction is the act of smoking itself.

Within the last forty to fifty years children all over America, in both private and public schools are taught that smoking is bad for you health. Elementary students are exposed to graphic documentaries to scare children into never smoking. However, the first cigarette continues to be a rite of passage into the teens, then a “something to do” at parties, and ultimately, even with all the bans on public smoking a habit. Cigarette smoking is considered a designer addiction, because the cause of the addiction is the act of smoking, itself.

Nicotine levels continue to go up.

A reanalysis of nicotine yield from major brand name cigarettes sold in Massachusetts from 1997 to 2005 has confirmed that manufacturers have steadily increased the levels of this agent in cigarettes. This independent analysis, based on data submitted to the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) by the manufacturers, found that increases in smoke nicotine yield per cigarette averaged 1.6 percent each year, or about 11 percent over a seven-year period (1998-2005). Nicotine is the primary addictive agent in cigarettes. In an opinion in US vs. Philip Morris USA et. al. Judge Gladys Kessler wrote that tobacco companies "can and do control the level of nicotine delivered in order to create and sustain addiction" and further, that the "goal to ensure that their products deliver sufficient nicotine to create and sustain addiction influences their selection and combination of design parameters."

We all know that Cigarette Smoking is bad for us.

Cigarette smoking causes an estimated 438,000 premature deaths (or about 1 of every 5 deaths) annually in the U.S., and approximately 900,000 persons become addicted to smoking each year” Harvard School of Public Health Thursday, January 18, 2007.

As was stated, the addiction for Nicotine is a designer addiction, generated by the act of smoking cigarettes. The withdrawal time for Nicotine is a mere 72 hours. As the body's nicotine level continues to fall during the 72 hours of physical withdrawal, our mind’s time trigger will continue to be revisited until all nicotine has left the body. It is then that true and complete reconditioning of our time trigger will occur as our physical symptoms begin subsiding and our mind becomes conditioned to realize that time will no longer produce new nicotine. Withdrawal’s peak occurs at the 72-hour mark. The average "starter" will experience approximately six desire attacks or crave episodes on day three. By hour 96 or day four the number of attacks or episodes will diminish to about 3.5. By day ten the average number of daily craves is less than two. In that our time trigger was reconditioned upon depletion of our body's nicotine, we need to explore and understand the reason for our continuing craves.

So Why is it so hard to quit?

In order to understand the craving, we need to go back to basic neurochemistry. The “feel good” chemicals in our body, endorphins, are substituted with nicotine, which works like a mild opiate on the brain. For this reason a smoker will say that a cigarette relaxes them or calms their nerves. As the smoking interrupts the need for the brain to manufacture these endorphins, quitting is so difficult because the manufacturing of endorphins doesn’t just automatically jump start itself in the moment that one stops smoking. Additionally, because the body hasn’t been activating these neurotransmitters; these endorphins, there is no operating amount on stand-by. Therefore the cravings are intolerable for most, even after the nicotine has left the body. This is why Auriculotherapy is so effective for helping people quit smoking in just three visits.

The combination of Auriculotherapy plus the Torque Release Technique Chiropractic adujustments do several things to ensure success. First the Nervous System is put back on line so to speak, to restore normal nerve communication pathways so that the brain is effectively communicating with the body via that nerve superhighway called the spinal chord. Additionally, the adjustment itself stimulates the opiate receptors in the dorsal horn of the spinal chord which is why most people state after receiving this ultra gentle form of Chiropractic care that they are very relaxed. Application of the light electro-microcurrent stimulation of the appropriate points on the ears surface literally jumpstart the locations in various places in the brain such as the hypothalamus, to activate neurotransmitter production; specifically those “feel good” endorphins. When we are calm, happy, and at peace, there is no anxiety, stressed feelings, and cravings. There is no psychology involved, only activation of normal electro-chemical brain activity, that the smoking eliminated over time.

The calming effect of the Auriculotherapy for treatment of these Addiction points on the ear’s surface for the hand to mouth act of smoking, craving, and anxiety can actually begin to occur while the patient is being treated. The patient can feel a calming come over him or her, and often a patient will remark at the end of a session that they feel light, or calm. Some patients have exclained, “So this is what normal people feel like”.

The only disclaimer for Auriculotherapy to assist in the Quit Smoking process is that patient/client must be ready to quit. The home, car, office must be completely smoke/cigarette free. Absolutely, no cigarettes can be smoked during the three day treatment, or the protocol must begin again.

We have great success with our program and our dedicated patients. We look forward to helping you live a healthy life, cigarette free.
